Zelpha May Stevens was received in the Lords arms on Sunday, January 1, 2017 at her home in Bloomfield with her loving Sister Ida and Caregiver Mary by her side. She was born on December 17, 1926 to Gilmore and Theresa Fothergill in May Pen, Clarendon, Jamaica, West Indies. Zelpha met and fell in love with Colin Stevens and were married soon after. The couple along with her step-daughter Colleen left Jamaica and migrated to Windsor, Ontario, Canada in 1975. While there Zelpha's career blossomed as a Wedding Planner and Dress Designer. Designing began early in life, she was an accomplished wedding planner, working various aspects of the business; designing and sewing elaborate wedding and bridesmaids dresses; designing and baking delicious wedding cakes; catering, floral design and wedding events decorating. She also worked as a Loss Prevention Specialist at numerous high-end department stores. While later settling in Connecticut Zelpha worked at the Hebrew Home for ten years as a CNA. During and after her retirement she continued with her passion for cooking, baking and sewing – specializing in wedding gowns. She had a loving spirit that was very giving of herself to God, family and friends. Zelpha had an amazing zest for life – she was always known for loving "the finer things in life;" with her fabulous flair for fashion! She was tenacious and spunky – a fighter to the very end!! Zelpha loved the Lord – she was a member of Full Gospel Foundation Building Ministries International, located in Bloomfield CT. She dearly loved her niece and nephew, Apostle Cheryl and Pastor John Fortson Sr., and her entire church family who prayed and visited her throughout the years. Her commitment to service was also prevalent as she served on the Beautification Ministry with passion, zeal and love. In her later years her brownies was a nice treat that she sold after service! She leaves to cherish her precious memories a step-daughter Colleen and grandchildren; her siblings; four sisters Ida Johnson, Christine Cox, Beryl and Perl Fothergill; four brothers Barrington, Ivan, Devon and Johnny Fothergill. Zelpha lovingly shared Ida's kids as her own; Maxim Johnson (Sonia) of Florida, Donna Johnson of New Britain, Marlon Johnson of Hartford and Andrea Floyd of Windsor and a host of nieces, nephews, Godchildren, cousins, friends and Caregivers who lovingly cared for her. Zelpha was predeceased by both parents Gilmore and Theresa Fothergill; her three brothers Lloyd, Gerald and Hector Fothergill. Her family will receive friends on Tuesday, January 17, 10-11 a.m., followed by a Homegoing Service at 11 a.m., at the Full Gospel Foundation Building Ministries International, 42 East Dudley Town Rd., Bloomfield. Burial will follow in Spring Grove Cemetery, Hartford.
