William "Bill" Henry Steele, 79, of Canton, beloved husband of Maryann Steele, passed away peacefully on May 10, 2017 in Simsbury. Born in Lowell, Massachusetts, Bill was the son of the late William and Bernadette (Jackson) Steele. Bill lived most of his life in southern California where he earned many of his accolades, and experienced an exciting and adventurous life. He was extremely patriotic and served his country in the U.S. Navy, Coast Guard, and Air Force. His duties as a military police officer during the Korean War sparked a lifelong passion for criminal justice. Bill worked tirelessly for the Santa Barbara District Attorney's Office, eventually earning the title of Chief Investigator and serving in that capacity for most of his career. He was recognized in many other roles in the criminal justice system, including deputy sheriff, detective, private investigator, and coroner. He was awarded a Bachelor's degree from the University of La Verne and teaching credentials from UCLA, and his commitment to education allowed him to share his experience with students as a Professor of Criminal Justice. Aside from his profession, Bill was a true family man. He loved the time he could spend with his wife, children and grandchildren. Bill had a wonderful sense of humor, and a fun-loving, adventurous spirit that allowed him to make friends easily. He lived faithfully by his values, and was always committed to making his family the happiest they could be. Bill always gave selflessly in service to his community and country, and he was a truly special husband, brother, father, and grandfather that will always be loved and remembered. In addition to his wife, Maryann, Bill is survived by his step-son, Donald Orsillo; his step-daughter, Marné Dooley; his brothers, James and Allan Steele; and his four beautiful grandchildren, Sydney Orsillo, Madison Orsillo, Joseph Dooley, and Ryan Dooley; his nephews, Allan St. Louis and James St. Louis; his nieces, Priscilla St. Louis and Kelley Lochmandy; his son-in law, Jeff Dooley and daughter-in law, Kathy Orsillo. A graveside service for Bill will be held at 11:30AM on Monday, May 15 at the Connecticut State Veterans Cemetery, 317 Bow Lane, Middletown, CT 06457. In lieu of flowers, donations in Bill's honor may be made to the Lewy Body Dementia Association, 912 Killian Hill Road, S.W., Lilburn, Georgia 30047. Bill's family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to the doctors, nurses, rehabilitation staff and CNA's at the Governor's House nursing facility in Simsbury for all their kindness, compassion and determination in providing the best care for Bill. The Carmon Funeral Home & Family Center of Avon is in care of the arrangements.
