Walter H. Zessin, 95, of Windsor, beloved husband for 52 years of the late Constance "Connie" (Munro) Zessin, passed away on Saturday, (February 9, 2013) at his home. Born in Fairview, MA on December 25, 1917, son of the late Hugo Henry and Mary (Krumbach) Zessin, he was raised in Northampton, MA and graduated from trade school there. Walter enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1940 and served during World War II on the USS Texas, a battleship that fought in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters. He rose through the ranks and was honorably discharged as a Chief Petty Officer in 1946. After the war, Walter returned to Northampton and married, later moving to Enfield, CT for a brief time before settling in Poquonock, CT in 1961. Walter worked as a stationary engineer and boiler operator at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft in East Hartford for over 30 years before his retirement in 1981. After his retirement he and his wife Connie enjoyed spending time together and with their family. In his spare time and during his retirement, Walter enjoyed gardening, fishing, and bowling with a Pratt & Whitney league at Silver Lanes in East Hartford. Walter also loved to play cards, especially cribbage and setback, with family and friends. An avid sports fan, Walter enjoyed watching the UConn Women's and Men's basketball teams, the Boston Red Sox, and the NY Giants. He leaves two sons, Donald Zessin and his wife Cathie of East Granby and Mark Zessin and his wife Sandra of Glastonbury; four daughters, Mary Ann Florkoski of Windsor, Lynn Grakowsky and her husband John of Windsor, Karen Tosti and her husband James of Avon, and Pauline Voyer and her husband Michael of Canton; a sister, Matilda Gutowski of Arizona; thirteen grandchildren, Donald, Todd, Connie, Stefan, Jonathan and his wife Roxanne, Mariah, Peter, Shaun and his wife Shannon, Jennifer and her husband Matt, Justin, Jessica, Alicia, and Stephen; three great grandchildren, Michael, Giulia, and Morrigan; and several nieces and nephews. Besides his wife, he was predeceased by a daughter, Jayne King; a brother Fred; a sister Pauline Zewski; and a son-in-law, Philip Florkoski. Family and friends may gather on Friday, February 15, 9:15 a.m., at the Carmon Poquonock Funeral Home, 1816 Poquonock Ave. followed by a Funeral Mass, 10 a.m., at St. Joseph Church, Poquonock. Burial will follow in Elm Grove Cemetery, Poquonock. His family will receive friends on Thursday, February 14, 4-7 p.m., at the Carmon Poquonock Funeral Home. Walter's family has requested that memorial donations be made to St. Joseph Church, P.O. Box 253, Windsor, CT 06095.
