Shirley Lucille Ransom, 93, of Suffield and formerly of East Hartland, beloved wife for 36 years of the late Leonard B. Ransom, Jr., passed away on Tuesday, November 14, 2017, at Hartford Hospital. Born in Bloomfield on November 5, 1924, daughter of the late Lewis and Margaret Lucille (Norton) Hayes, she was raised in Bloomfield and was a graduate of Bloomfield High School. After high school, Shirley pursued a career in nursing and attended a nursing school in New York. She left school before graduation to marry her childhood sweetheart and family friend, Leonard B. Ransom, Jr. After raising her five children, she returned to work as certified nurse’s aide at McLean Home in Simsbury and at the Avon Convalescent Home. Shirley was very artistic and musical. She enjoyed making pottery and hand-stenciling designs on furniture. She also played the organ for many years and enjoyed taking music lessons and trips to see musical performances. Shirley was a longtime member of the First Congregational Church in Hartland where she served on the music committee and the Ladies Aid Society. She was very proud of her community in East Hartland and was always interested in learning more about the history of the town. Most of all, Shirley will be remembered for her love and dedication to her family, especially her husband, children, and grandchildren. She leaves four sons, Earl Ransom and his wife Ruby of East Granby, David Ransom of Granby, Gary Ransom and his wife Dawnalyn of Granville, MA, and Thomas Ransom and his wife Laurie of East Hartland; a daughter, Donna Lee Ryder and her husband Robert Lee of East Granby; eight grandchildren, Candice Ransom, Jason Eckley and his wife Rachel, James Eckley, Desiree Ransom, Lisa Wentworth and her husband Daniel, Josh Ransom, David Maloney, and Carol Lynn Maloney; and seven great grandchildren, Madelyn, Hailey, Tyler, Caden, Dion, Devon, and Arianna. Besides her husband, she was predeceased by two brothers, Lewis Hayes, Jr. and Robert Hayes. Her family will receive friends Tuesday, November 21, 9-11 a.m., followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m., at the Hayes-Huling & Carmon Funeral Home, 364 Salmon Brook St., Granby. Burial will follow in East Hartland Cemetery, East Hartland. Memorial donations may be made to the Granby Ambulance Association, 1 Pegville Rd., Granby, CT 06035.
