Shirley (Cain) Peterson, 89, of Avon, passed away Thursday, June 16, 2016. Born and raised in Rockford, IL, daughter of the late Francis and Fern (McDougall) Cain, she graduated from Rider College, NJ. She lived in West Hartford, where she was active in Girl Scouting before moving to Avon and to the Gables in Farmington. She had been employed for many years as an administrative assistant for CIGNA and was proud of being designated a Certified Professional Secretary. She was a member of the Metropolitan Women's Club, the Clan MacDougall Society, and the West Avon Congregational Church. An ardent Red Sox fan, she was a voracious reader, always had a sewing or craft project at hand, and made her own Christmas cards for over 60 years. She leaves her seven children; Marjorie P. Bender (Harald) of Simsbury; Melinda Peterson (Philip Proctor) of Los Angeles, CA; Arthur Peterson (Linda Pountney) of West Hartford; Bruce Peterson (Kelly Moore) of Pigeon Forge, TN; Carole Peterson (James Brice) of Pleasanton, CA; Alan Peterson (Cindy) of South Windsor; and Bonnie Peterson of San Diego, CA; six grandchildren (Karl, Matthew, Seth, Megan, Brian, and Luke); four great grandchildren (Jake, Liam, Lindsay, and Amelia); two step grandchildren (Kristin and Noah); and her sister Naomi LaPlant of Kankakee, IL. She was predeceased by her former husband, John H. Peterson. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, July 9, 2016, 11am at the West Avon Congregational Church, 280 Country Club Road, Avon. The Rev. Dr. Brian Hardee will officiate. A reception will follow the service. Burial will be in Willwood Cemetery, Rockford, IL at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the West Avon Congregational Church. The family wishes to thank the staff at the Avon Health Center where she was lovingly cared for during the last five years.
