S. Robert Pugliese, 83, of Vernon, beloved husband of 56 years to Marie (Fasanelli) Pugliese, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 22, 2016 at Manchester Hospital with his family at his side. Born in Hartford, the son of the late Joseph and Angela (LaPenta) Pugliese, he grew up and lived in Hartford before moving to Vernon 56 years ago. He was a graduate of Bulkeley High School in Hartford. He attended the Modern School of Photography and Brandeis University. Robert was a well known photo journalist for over 45 years. He covered many political and breaking news events. He was employed as a photographer for the former Hartford Times for over 20 years, and after the Times went out of business, he spent 25 years as a photo journalist at the University of Connecticut. Robert proudly served his country in the U. S. Army during the Korean War. He was a member of the Connecticut News Photographers Association, the National Press Photographers Association, a member of VERSA, and he also served as the photographer for the fire department in Vernon for many years. Robert was also a longtime member of American Legion Post # 14 in Vernon, a life member of the Rockville Fish and Game Club, a founding member of the Black Knights Archery Association, and was co-founder of Safety Town. He was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church in Vernon and he also served as a Faith Formation Instructor. He is a member of Our Lady of Fatima Council # 4122, Knights of Columbus. Robert enjoyed spending time with his family, camping, fishing, woodworking, hunting and archery. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Robert Pugliese and his wife Jackie of Ellington, Lori Fabrycki and her husband Scott of Ellington, Lisa Pugliese of Vernon, Mark Pugliese of Vernon, and Gina Couturier and her husband David of Ellington; seven grandchildren, Crystal, Anthony, Dale, Deonna, Sierra, Zachary and Cody; two great grandchildren, Marley and Dominic, and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. He was also predeceased by his sister, Rosemarie Martinelli. His family will receive friends for calling hours on Tuesday, January 26, 2016 from 4 – 8 p.m. at the Ladd-Turkington & Carmon Funeral Home, 551 Talcottville Road (Route 83), Vernon. Family and friends may gather at the funeral home on Wednesday, January 27, 2016 at 10 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, 550 Hartford Turnpike, Vernon. Burial will follow in Mount Saint Benedict Cemetery, Bloomfield with military honors. Memorial donations in Robert's memory may be made to the National Kidney Foundation, 1463 Highland Avenue, Cheshire, CT 06410.
