Rocco Eugene "Rock" Montano, 71, of South Windsor, beloved husband of Diana (DaFonte) Montano, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 25, 2016 at St. Francis Hospital, surrounded by his family. Rocco was born on July 15, 1945 in Hartford, CT, son of the late Eugene "Nish" and Eva (Sparveri) Montano. Rocco grew up in East Hartford and attended St. Mary's School and East Hartford High School. He was married to the love of his life, Diana DaFonte at St Justin's Church in Hartford on September 23, 1967. They began their life together in South Windsor over 48 years ago. He was a parishioner of St. Francis of Assisi Church. A prominent South Windsor Business owner, Rocco owned and operated South Windsor Garage Inc., which was started by Rocco's father, Nish and his cousin, John Biase. Rocco's God Gift became apparent as a young boy, after he disassembled his sister's bicycle and reassembled it on his own! He and his cousin, Noni (Anthony Biase) played in the sand pits behind the garage, until their fathers decided to put them to work-trying to keep them out of trouble! Rocco and Noni ran South Windsor Garage for several years after the passing of their fathers. He was an avid race car fan and enjoyed weekends spent at Riverside Park Speedway working on cars, and was an avid Joe Gibbs Racing fan. Rocco's Saturdays would be spent fishing on his boat, while eating sangwhiches with his cousin, Frank Pezzente and lifelong friend, Geno Chiapponi and the guys. Rocco was in every sense of the word an outdoorsman, who enjoyed snowmobiling, skeet and target shooting, and being outside as much as he could. Rocco could be found at the local 7-Eleven store early in the morning's, scratching his instant scratch tickets surrounded by his friends! He loved taking trips in his "rocket ship" to visit his "cousins" at the casino!!! He was a charismatic person who loved to laugh. Playing setback with the guys on Thursdays after work was the highlight of his week-not only was it a card game, it was an eating feast as well! He was a member of the Elks Club in East Hartford, South Windsor Chamber of Commerce and was honored with the South Windsor Chamber of Commerce Family Business of the Year Award in 2009. Rocco will be remembered by family and friends as a man who would give you the shirt off his back, help you out in a jam and expect nothing in return. Rocco found his happiness surrounded by his loving family and friends, he loved life and loved his family. Rocco leaves behind countless family members and friends. His family will always be eternally grateful to be blessed by the love of a very special friend, (A.K.A. his Chauffeur) David Paparian. David has devoted the last several years of his life being by Rocco's side. Big Zack has been instrumental in Rocco's journey as well, grabbing the reins with Rita during his time of absence at SWG, running he business. Along with his wife of over 48 years, Diana, he leaves his daughters, Gina Louise Montano of New Britain, Tina "YaYa" D'Alessandro and her husband Bruce of Huntersville, NC and Rita "Squirt" Montano Bader and her husband Erik of Ellington; his sisters, Angela Tischofer of East Hartford and was predeceased by her husband "Brother Artie", Dorothy Mapplebeck and her husband Bob of East Hartford and Patty Carpino and her husband Frank of South Windsor and his beloved grandchildren, Reese Anne Bader and Zachary Rocco Bader both of Ellington. His family will receive friends on Monday, August 29, 2016, from 4 to 8 p.m., at the Samsel & Carmon Funeral Home, 419 Buckland Rd., South Windsor. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, August 30, 2016, 10 a.m., directly at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 673 Ellington Rd., South Windsor. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery in East Hartford. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the CCSU Foundation Inc., PO Box 612 New Britain, CT 06050. Proceeds from the memorial donations will be used to create a scholarship for South Windsor students in Rocco's name. Please visit us at
