Robert Stanley Gilchrist, 87, of Suffield, beloved husband of Hope Collins Gilchrist, died peacefully on March 12, 2012 at a local convalescent home. He was born June 9, 1924, in San Diego, California, but grew up in Bath, Maine, after driving across the country in a Model A Ford in 1931 with his parents and his sister. He served in the Merchant Marine as an engineer after graduating from the Main Maritime Academy in 1944. He graduated from the University of Maine in 1949 with an Education major, and received a Master of Arts Degree in Education from Fairfield University. He taught physics and mathematics in Southbury and Wilton, CT., until retiring in 1983. After retiring he and his wife moved to Suffield, CT. For many years he and his wife camped around the country in a traveler trailer, visiting every state except Hawaii and Idaho. They also motored to Mesa, AZ, to spend the winters in an RV Park. Robert enjoyed building ship models as well as constructing a large HO train layout. He belonged to the Hartford Division of the Railroad Enthusiasts. Along with his wife, Hope, he is survived by his children, Bruce Gilchrist and his wife Sarah of Washington D.C., John Gilchrist and his wife Anne of Novi, MI, Cynthia Slebodnik and her husband Joseph of Carbondale, PA and Elizabeth Jackson of Jermyn, PA; 16 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his sister, Dorothy Fox. His family will receive friends on Saturday, April 28, 2012, from 1 to 3 p.m., at the Nicholson & Carmon Funeral Home, 443 East St. (Rt. 159) Suffield. A graveside service with Military Honors will follow at 3:30 p.m., at the Woodlawn Cemetery, Suffield. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Suffield Ambulance Association, P.O.
