Robert F. Benard, 90, of Windsor, husband of the late Marjorie (Conners) Benard passed away peacefully Monday, May 29th at St. Francis Hospital. "Bob" was born September 14, 1926, one of nine siblings to the late George and Elizabeth Benard where he grew up on a farm. At 17 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and proudly served as a Seabee on Okinawa during the surrender of Japan. Bob returned to Windsor where he became a hard-working, self-employed contractor where he often worked alongside his sons. He was involved in many jobs for the town of Windsor as well as many residential jobs throughout Connecticut. He worked well into his 70's always willing to lend a helping hand to all. Bob had a passion for thoroughbred horses and loved to watch them race. In his earlier years, he loved the August trips to Saratoga with his daughter Robyn and studying the Racing Form to determine a winning daily double. Later in life, he looked forward to meeting his OTB friends where they would endlessly "debate" the stats - jockey histories, track conditions and picking winners. 9, 1, 4 will always be his favorite numbers. Knowing that he will be with them in spirit, Bob's family and his friends will be looking for these numbers to come in on June 10th at the Belmont Stakes. He leaves one sister Gloria Taylor of Newington, a brother-in-law Edmond Krajewski of Windsor, four children, Linda Dawson of Windsor; Robyn Benard of Simsbury; Robert S Benard and his wife Kathryn of Windsor and Mark Benard of Windsor. He also leaves four grandchildren, five great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews and his four-legged GrandDog, Maggie Mayah. A very special thank you to his daughter Linda who cared for him in his home these past few years. A memorial service will be held at 11 AM Friday, June 2 at the Carmon Poquonock Funeral Home, 1816 Poquonock Ave Poquonock, followed by burial in Windsor Veterans Memorial Cemetery. His family will receive friends prior to the service on Friday from 10 AM to 11 AM. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Windsor Independent Living Association (WILA) P.O. Box 908, Windsor, CT 06095.
