Richard J. Matt, of Avon, passed away, Monday, February 1, 2016. Born in Cleveland, OH, and son of the late John and Margaret Matt, he has lived in Avon and the Farmington Valley for 50 years. Raised in OH, he received his BS in Mechanical Engineering from Case-Western Reserve University, Cleveland, OH, in 1952 then served during the Korean War in the US Army. During his career as an engineer, he held various positions with engineering companies, among them the New Departure-Hyatt Division of General Motors involved with rocket engines and space platforms; Fafner Bearing Division of Textron where he supervised product development and patents; and finally ABB/Combustion Engineering where he retired from; involved with nuclear power plants. He was particularly proud that he was involved in the design team that developed the first heart lung machine. During his professional career he registered 24 US patents, authored 19 articles on engineering and management subjects, and was a member of various professional engineering associations. In his community life, he was a member of the Avon Chamber of Commerce and best known for his talents as a professional magician. He performed under the "Magical World of Richard Matt" for everything from children's birthday parties, to corporate and public events. He was a great showman who could mystify audiences at all levels. He leaves a son Todd Matt (Lisa Barall-Matt) of Canton, two daughters Kimberly Appleyard (Dan) of Vernon and Michelle Matt of Canton; a stepson Kenneth Tarantul (Marta) of FL; 4 grandchildren Tyler and Morgan Matt, Brian and Michael Appleyard; 2 step grandchildren Tomas and AndrewTarantul; a brother Robert Matt of CA; and a special friend Anona Boardman of Avon. Besides his parents he was predeceased by his wife Helen Matt, stepdaughter Andrea Brady and Betty Matt. His family will receive friends, Sunday February 14, 2016, from 2-3 pm at the Carmon Funeral Home & Family Center, 301 Country Club Road, Avon. A Service in Celebration of his Life will begin at 3 pm follow by a reception. Contributions in his memory may be made to the CT Children's Medical Center, 282 Washington St., Hartford, CT, 06106, where he performed many magic shows to benefit the children.
