Richard "Dick" J. Allen, 81, of Vernon, loving husband of 55 years to Dolores (Matarazzo) Allen, was called to eternal life on Christmas Day, Sunday, December 25, 2016. Born in Boston, MA, the son of the late Michael and Frances (Griffin) Allen, he grew up and lived in Boston before moving to Vernon in 1971. He was a graduate of Boston Latin School, Class of 1953 where he was an athlete who lettered in baseball, track, and football. Dick earned his undergraduate degree from Boston College, Class of 1957, and he completed his MBA at the University of Hartford. He proudly served his country in the U. S. Marine Corps. He began his career with the Travelers Insurance Company in the Boston office and later was transferred to the Hartford office until his retirement in 1994. After retirement, Dick worked part time for the Travelers as a consultant until 2004. He was a former member of the Boston Jaycees. He was an avid sports fan and he enjoyed playing baseball and hockey. Dick was a communicant of St. Joseph Church in Vernon. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his beloved children, Glenn Allen and his wife Angela of Hebron, Gary Allen and his wife Deborah of Portland, OR, and Diane Allen of Port Orange, FL; seven grandchildren, Simon, Phoebe, Zachary, Tess, Benjamin, Grace, and Roland, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Marilyn Kelley, and his brother, Robert Allen. His family will receive friends for calling hours on Thursday, December 29, 2016 from 5 – 8 p.m. at the Ladd-Turkington & Carmon Funeral Home, 551 Talcottville Road (Route 83), Vernon. Family and friends may gather at the funeral home on Friday, December 30, 2016 at 9 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Church, 33 West Street, Vernon. Burial will be private and at the convenience of his family. Memorial donations in his memory may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 2080 Silas Deane Highway, 2nd Floor, Rocky Hill, CT 06067 or to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
