Peter S. Avery, 84, of Granby, beloved husband of Joan (Bourgeois) Avery, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 20, 2016 at St. Francis Hospital. Born in Hartford to the late Paul and Carolyn (Colton) Avery, he lived in Granby most of his life and was a member of the Westfield Evangelical Free Church. Peter served his country proudly with the US Army during the Korean War. He was a 1949 graduate of Simsbury High School and attended Springfield College where he earned his Bachelor's of Science in 1953 and his Masters of Science in 1956. Peter was the health and physical education teacher at Winsted Northwestern Regional High School and Canton Public Schools before his retirement in 1982. After his retirement he worked at the US Post Office in Hartford from 1982 to 1985 and taught driver's education for Wallenberg Driving School. Peter was an avid sports fan and enjoyed gardening, but his true passion was his family, especially his children and grandkids. Besides his wife Joan of Granby, he is survived by his daughters Trudy Furno and her husband Vincent of Oviedo, FL, and Tammy Meyers and her husband Arlen of East Hartland; and his grandchildren Karl Furno, Kurt Furno and his wife Erica, Erin Meyers and Katelin Meyers.
