Paul R. Simison, 60, of West Suffield, Conn., died unexpectedly on Wednesday, March 28. Born in Northampton, Mass., he was the son of the late R. Donald and Martha M. Simison; he was an audiologist, and a 25-year volunteer firefighter with the Suffield Fire Department, Co. 2. He was inspired to join the fire service by his late father-in-law, James Mackey, and previously served as a volunteer with the Broad Brook Fire Department in East Windsor, Conn. Active in his community, he was one of the founding coaches of the Suffield Youth Lacrosse program for girls. His work as a volunteer firefighter was among his great passions in life, second only to his family and friends. He was a kind, unselfish, generous and gentle person, who loved spending time on Martha's Vineyard where he found great peace and joy. He loved his mother-in-law, Doris Mackey. He also enjoyed reading, traveling the world with his family, gardening, cooking, bicycling, the New York Yankees, and fine food with a good beer. He was longtime devoted blood donor.A graduate of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, he earned master's degrees in education of the deaf from Smith College and in audiology from the University of Connecticut. He was previously a teacher at Clarke School for the Deaf in Northampton. He owned the Hearing Improvement Center, in West Hartford, with his business partner and dear friend, Alan Dumaine. He leaves his wife of 32 years, Nancy (Mackey) Simison, their three daughters, Elizabeth Ellen, Erin May, and Kathryn Anne, all of West Suffield, his sister, Cynthia G. Simison, of Northampton, Mass., his extended family in Rockland County, N.Y., a wealth of friends, and his dog, Radar. He died with his other canine pal, Jasper, at his side. A memorial service will be conducted on Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Suffield Fire Department, Company 2, 9 Ratley Road, West Suffield. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to the Suffield Fire Association, training account, Mountain Road, Suffield, Connecticut, 06078. Nicholson & Carmon Funeral Home in Suffield has care of the arrangements. Please visit us at www.carmonfuneralhome.com for online condolences.
