Mary (Bowman) Cowles, 90, of Manchester, beloved wife of Truman D. Cowles died peacefully on Friday, June 1, 2018 at St. Francis Hospital. She was born on January 30, 1928 in Hartford, daughter of the late Joseph and Bridget (Foley) Bowman. Mary grew up in Hartford and graduated from Bulkeley High School with the Class of 1945. She went on to obtain a bachelor’s degree in Economics from Saint Joseph College in West Hartford. She married the love of her life, Truman D. Cowles on November 3, 1951. They spent a short time in Washington D.C. before moving back to West Hartford and eventually settled in Manchester in 1957. Mary worked at Assumption Junior High School in Manchester and then spent twenty-three years at Pleasant Valley School teaching fifth grade. Mary was an avid reader. Travel and dancing all over the world with her husband became her greatest pleasure. She was a past president of the Ladies of Columbus and served on many committees and groups within the South Windsor School system. She was a member of the parish of St. Teresa of Calcutta, attending both St. Bridget and St. Bartholomew churches since 1957 and served as a greeter. A kind, caring, loving and devoted wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and great grandmother she will be dearly missed. Along with her husband Truman, of over 67 years, she leaves her children, Mary Jo C. Regan and her husband J. Mark of Windsor, Truman D. Cowles Jr., and his wife Lana of Bluffton, SC, and Elizabeth A. Brisco and her husband Douglas E. of Avon; her sister, Margaret Berube and her husband Ronald of Guilford; her sisters-in-law, Norma Bowman of Hendersonville, TN, and Barbara Bartosik of San Diego, California; her grandchildren, Jennifer E. Querim and her husband Damon of Simsbury, Kevin M. Regan and his wife Courtney of Boca Raton, FL, Michael J. Regan of Middletown, Brian D. Regan of Davie, FL, Ashley E. Cowles of Livermore, CA, Truman D. Cowles III of Santa Clara, CA, William J. Brisco of Avon, and Thomas B. Brisco of Avon; her great grandchildren, Alexa Querim, Reese Querim, Brennan Regan, and Braden Regan; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother, Joseph Bowman, and grandson, Robert M. Brisco. Her family will receive friends on Tuesday, June 5, 2018, from 9 - 10:15 a.m., at the Samsel & Carmon Funeral Home, 419 Buckland Rd., South Windsor. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11 a.m., at Saint Bartholomew Church, Manchester. Burial will be private at the request of her family.
