Joseph M. Skipper, 89, of Vernon, beloved husband of 63 years to Alma (Schneider) Skipper, went to be with his Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ on Tuesday, July 4, 2017 with his family at his side. Born in Stafford Springs, the youngest of eight children born to the late Anthony and Anna (Herbert) Skipper, he grew up and lived in Somersville before moving to Vernon in 1953. Prior to his retirement in 1993, Joe was employed by Country Pure in Ellington for 30 years. After retirement, Joe worked at local farms. He was a member of the Apostolic Christian Church in Ellington. He served in the U. S. Army, and he also served the U. S. Marine Corps during the Korean War. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Peggy Bahler and her husband Dave of Ellington, Jean Bahler and her husband Vern of Ellington, Don Skipper and his wife Cynthia of Ellington, and Joan Kratzke and her husband Scott of Vernon; ten grandchildren; four great grandchildren; a sister, Catherine Busky of Manchester; three sisters-in-law, Dolores Skipper of Ellington, Hannah Schneider of Ellington, and Marie Garrow and her husband Bernie of Vernon, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family. He was predeceased by three brothers, Anthony Jr., John, and Peter Skipper, and three sisters, Sophie Skipper, Elizabeth Feeley, and Margaret Skipper. His family would like to thank the staff at Vernon Manor and the VNA Hospice for the wonderful care they provided. His family will receive friends for calling hours on Friday, July 7, 2017 from 2 - 4 and 6 - 8 p.m. at the Apostolic Christian Church, 34 Middle Butcher Road, Ellington. Funeral service will be held at the church on Saturday, July 8, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow in Ellington Center Cemetery with military honors.
