After graduating from high school, Joe joined the Army Air Corp and proudly served in the 5th Division in the Pacific during W.W. II. After his military service, he met Helen Backlund and began a 70-year love affair that we all aspire to achieve. Joe attended the Stockbridge School of Agriculture and majored in turf sciences. He was the course superintendent at the Golf Club of Avon for over 25 years. He was a pioneer in turf grass production, growing, selling, and experimenting on a wide variety of sods for over 60 years. Over 38 years ago, Joe and his family opened the Simsbury Agway Store (now Bidwell's Yard, Garden, and Pet). In 1982, Joe was inducted as an honorary life member of the Connecticut Association of Golf Course Superintendents, (CAGCS). He and his wife Helen enjoyed many winters in Naples, Florida in semi-retirement as he always returned in the Spring to work on his beloved farm in Avon. He was a member of Gildo Consolini Post # 3272, VFW, Avon. Besides his loving wife, Helen, of 65 years, he leaves three sons, Bruce and his wife Margie Bidwell of Bloomfield, Clayton and his wife Toni Bidwell of Bloomfield, and Eric and his wife Dee Bidwell of Canton. Also, mourning his loss are his three precious granddaughters Maggie and Laura Bidwell of Canton and Annie Bidwell of Bloomfield. Besides his parents, Joe was predeceased by his sister Shirley Bidwell. His family would like to especially thank the staff of the Farmington Valley VNA for their wonderful care that allowed Joe to spend his final months at home with his family. His family will receive friends Wednesday, January 11, 2016, from 5-7:30pm at the Carmon Funeral Home & Family Center, 301 Country Club Road, Avon. Military honors and a Memorial Service to celebrate his life will follow at 7:30pm. Burial will be in Curtiss Cemetery, Wildwood Road, Simsbury at the convenience of the family.
