John Joseph Latonie, Sr., 69, of East Granby, passed away on Saturday, May 14, 2016 at Hartford Hospital. Born in Hartford on October 14, 1946, son of the late Vittie and Jean (Zawistowski) Latonie, he had spent most of his life in East Granby before moving to Windsor Locks six years ago. A veteran of the Vietnam War, John served in the US Navy on the USS Saratoga until his honorable discharge in 1968. He worked for the Town of Simsbury, Parks and Recreation Department for many years and also owned and operated the Village Spirit Shop in the center of Tariffville from 1979 until his retirement in 2000. In his spare time, he enjoyed gardening and riding his moped. He never passed up an opportunity to sing karaoke and as a young man he made several cross country trips with his brothers and friends. He leaves a son, John "Jay" Joseph Latonie, Jr. and his girlfriend, Corinne Roman of East Granby; three brothers, Robert Latonie and his wife Barbara of East Granby, Vittie Latonie and his wife Victoria of Granby, and Marc Latonie and his wife Judy of East Granby; a sister, Carol Nolan and her husband Roger of East Granby; two grandchildren, Madison and Zachary Latonie; two nephews; and three nieces. A graveside service with Military Honors will be held on Thursday, May 19, 1 p.m., at St. Bernard Cemetery, 7 Maple St., in the Tariffville section of Simsbury. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association, 45 Ash St, East Hartford, CT 06108.
