John Gladney King of Granby, formerly of Simsbury, died peacefully on October 1, 2015 at the age of 80, following an extended illness. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Kathryn, his son, Stephen King of New Britain, his daughter Glynis King Powers and her husband, Art Powers of New Hartford, as well as by his beloved granddaughter Katie Powers. He also leaves his brother in-law & sister in-law, Walt and Jane Johnson of Easton, MD and a nephew, Michael Johnson of Austin, TX. John was predeceased by his sister, Kay Powers of New Orleans and his parents Mattie and Joseph Gladney King of Slidell, LA. Raised in New Orleans, LA, John attended Jesuit High School and Graduated from Tulane University in 1957. Following service in the US Army Reserve, John was employed by Aetna Casualty & Surety in underwriting & risk management until his retirement in 1994. In his retirement John highly valued his continuing course work at Hartford Seminary and Holy Apostles Seminary in Cromwell. He enjoyed travel to the Southwest as well as his trips to Italy. However, his favorite times were spent with his family at the beach in Rhode Island. John was a quiet man, a life long reader and collector of books and CD's. His New Orleans roots showed in his manners as well as enthusiasm for good food and good music. John was kind, thoughtful and unassuming with a shy smile and dry wit. He will be forever in the hearts of those who knew him and loved him. A Celebration of Life Service will be held in the Chapel of First Church of Christ, Simsbury on Thursday October 15, 2015 at 2pm. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.
