Harold H. Paffrath, 97, of Simsbury, beloved husband for 69 years of Estella (Layman) Paffrath, passed away on Thursday, July 27, 2017, surrounded by his family at his home. Born in Bronx, NY on March 14, 1920, son of the late Henry and Louise (Essers) Paffrath, he was raised in Bronx, NY and was a graduate of Stuyvesant High School in NY, NY. After high school, Harold worked at Grand Union in the accounting department before being drafted to serve during World War II. Harold served in the Army Air Corps as an airplane mechanic and was honorably discharged as a sergeant in 1945. Following his service, Harold returned to New York and attended NYU on the GI Bill. He received a Bachelors Degree and Masters Degree in Mechanical Engineering and worked for brief time in the Bronx before taking a position at Hazeltine Corporation in Greenlawn, Long Island, NY. He worked as a mechanical engineer and later as a facilities manager over a 30 year career in the aerospace industry. After his retirement from Hazeltine in 1988, Harold and his wife Estella drove cross-country and up to Alaska completing over 11,000 miles. Harold loved cycling and belonged to the Acme Wheelman Cycling Club in Manhattan as a young man. He loved the ocean, walking on the beach, and spending time with his family. Harold spent most of his life in East Northport, Long Island, NY before moving to Atlanta, GA for four years, and then to Simsbury, CT in 1996. During his retirement, he loved taking road trips with his wife, riding his motorcycle, fixing things and working around his home. Most of all, Harold will be remembered as a clear thinker and a practical man in all aspects of his life. He shared many life lessons with his children and grandchildren and will be greatly missed by all. Besides his wife, he leaves three children, Nancy Clark and her husband James of Granby, CT, Eric Paffrath of Comers, GA, and Jane Parent and her husband Dave of Bradford, MA; a sister, Eleanore Flom of Newtown Square, PA; five grandchildren, Michael, Katherine, and Daniel Clark, and Nicholas and Alison Parent. He was predeceased by a brother, Fred Paffrath. A Celebration of his life will be held at the Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Simsbury, CT at later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, 7 Wescott Rd., Simsbury, CT 06070.
