Gilles Yvon LaRochelle, 86, of Vernon, formerly of East Hartford, beloved husband of Gaetane (Champagne) LaRochelle, died peacefully on Monday, September 5, 2016 at the Hospital for Special Care in New Britain with his wife of 54 years by his side. Gilles was born September 15, 1929 in Saint-Prosper, Canada, son of the late Johnny and Emma (Champagne) LaRochelle. Gilles grew up in Canada and served in the Canadian Air Force. He came to the U.S. in January 1962 and married the love of his life, Gaetane Champagne July 21, 1962. They began their life together in Hartford, before moving to East Hartford where they would spend over 31 years. Gilles was an electrician by trade and worked for Stone Electric and SOS Electric before starting LaRochelle Electric in 1971, which later became LaRochelle & Son Electric Co.. Gilles was a hardworking and devoted husband, brother, father and grandfather. He was known as Mr. Gadget and spent hours in his garage repairing and modifying anything that needed fixing. Most currently he had his own tinkering room in the basement where he stored all his tools in his workbench so he could enjoy his hobby of stripping copper wire. He was a lifetime member of the French Social Circle in East Hartford, the Knights of Columbus Council 6119 in West Hartford and the French American Business Owners Club. He enjoyed bowling, golf and especially playing cards. For many years he spent time camping in his hometown in Canada and enjoyed spending time in Lauderdale Lakes, FL during his retirement. Along with his wife Gaetane he will be dearly missed by his children, John and his wife Joanne of Broad Brook and his daughter, Carole and her companion Scott (Baron) of Manchester; his beloved grandchildren, James and his fiancé, Kelly (Clemens) of Manchester, Jeffrey and Jason both of Broad Brook and his great granddaughter, who brought him great joy, Peyton. As well as many nieces and nephews, brothers and sisters-in-law and many close friends. Gilles was the last surving sibling, predeceased by 11 brothers and sisters. His family will receive friends on Sunday, September 11, 2016, from 4 – 7 p.m., at the Samsel & Carmon Funeral Home, 419 Buckland Rd., South Windsor. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, September 12, 2016, 10 a.m., at St. Bridget Church, 80 Main St., Manchester. Burial will be private at the request of his family.
