AHRENS. Gilbert P. Ahrens, 78, of Suffield, beloved husband of Christine (von der Schulenburg) Ahrens passed away Wednesday, June 21, 2017. Born June 24, 1938 in Hartford, son of the late Bernhard and Mary (Bissell) Ahrens, he lived in Suffield his entire life. Gil graduated from University of Pennsylvania, Wharton School, where he was a member of the Mask and Wig Club. He was employed for many years with the Hartford National Bank before retiring. He was an enthusiastic fan of modern Jazz music and loved playing the drums. He loved sports cars, was an avid fisherman, an expert stamp collector and, more recently, took up oil painting with gusto. Gil was a member of the Suffield Rotary Club, the Suffield Volunteer Ambulance Association, the Suffield Historic Commission, a former member of the Fox Hollow Gun Club and was on the Board of Trustees for the Wightman Camp. He was a life-long member of Second Baptist Church. Besides Christine, his wife of nearly 56 years, he is survived by his cherished dog Lucy; son Gilbert S. Ahrens and his wife Kim of Mountain View, CA; daughter Margot Hayes and her husband Randal of Montville, ME; a brother, John Ahrens and his wife Lois of Duxbury, MA; two sisters-in-law, Pattie Ahrens of Gladwin, PA and Alice ("Obi") Ahrens of Suffield; three grandchildren, Olivia Ahrens, Sena and Maximilian Hayes; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, Christopher Ahrens; a daughter, Victoria Ahrens; and two brothers, Leavitt Ahrens and Loomis Ahrens. His family will receive friends Saturday, June 24, 2017 from 6-9 PM at Nicholson & Carmon Funeral Home, 443 East St. N. (Rt. 159), Suffield. Funeral services will be held Sunday, June 25, 2017, 1:00 PM at Second Baptist Church, 100 North Main St., Suffield. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Second Baptist Church, 100 North Main St., Suffield, CT 06078 or to Suffield Emergency Aid, 450 South St., Suffield, CT 06078.
