Elizabeth Gilbert (Stickles) Shaw, 94, of Simsbury, beloved wife for 65 years of the late Donald Horton Shaw, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 20, 2016 in Simsbury. Born in Windsor on August 31, 1922, daughter of the late Howard E. and Gladys (Gilbert) Stickles, she was raised in Simsbury and was a graduate of Simsbury High School, Class of 1940. After staying home to raise her family, Elizabeth took a position with the Avon Medical Group. Seeing her potential, the doctors encouraged her to return to school and enter the Physician's Assistant Program at Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH. She graduated in 1975, and returned to the Avon Medical Group where she worked as a Certified Physician's Assistant until her retirement in 1984. Shortly after, Elizabeth and her husband moved to Granby and 16 years later returned to Simsbury in 2004. She was very proud of her family's history and could trace her ancestors back to the founding of the United States. She was a member of the Abigail Phelps Chapter, D.A.R. and had served as Past Regent, she was a member of the Simsbury Historical Society, and the Simsbury Genealogy and Historical Library. Elizabeth was a member of the Simsbury United Methodist Church and also belonged to the United Methodist Women's group at the church. She leaves two sons, Donald Shaw, Jr. and his wife Margaret "Peggy" of Granby and John Leon "Lee" Shaw and his wife Beth of Rindge, NH; two daughters, Candace Flaherty of Barkhamsted and Carrie Beth Withers and her husband Henry of West Simsbury; her nine grandchildren who affectionately referred to her as "sweetheart," Jed Flaherty and his wife Jessica, Erin Kunes and her husband Jason, Jessica MacLeod and her husband James, Sarah Tallarico and her husband Frank, Katherine Holeman and her husband George "Ran", Marissa Rosenfield and her husband Kacey, Trevor Shaw, Ashley Morgan and her husband Scott, and Henry Withers, Jr.; and 16 great grandchildren. Besides her husband, she was predeceased by a brother, James Stanclift Stickles; and a son-in-law, John Flaherty. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 3, 11 a.m., at the Simsbury United Methodist Church, 799 Hopmeadow St., Simsbury. Burial will be private in Simsbury Cemetery. The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to the nurses, caregivers, and staff at McLean in Simsbury for their expert care over the last several years. They have requested that memorial contributions be made to the Simsbury United Methodist Church, 799 Hopmeadow St., Simsbury, CT 06070 or to McLean Auxiliary to benefit patient needs, 75 Great Pond Rd., Simsbury, CT 06070.
