Edward Everette Mitchell passed away peacefully at home after a long battle with heart disease. He was born on March 16, 1940 in Abbeville AL to the late Robert and Julia Culver. Edward was a man of tremendous faith. He received early Christian education and was baptized at Bethlehem Baptist Church to later join Hopewell Baptist Church where he served in a number of ministries, including the Board of Trustees and the Concert Choir. Edward received his Bachelors of Science degree in Business Education at Lane College in Jackson, TN. He earned his master’s degree in English from Troy State University, Troy, AL and continued his studies at University of Iowa, Central Connecticut State University, and the New York College of Insurance. As an educator, Edward taught thousands of students in Alabama and Connecticut for 30 years, retiring from Bulkeley High School in 2000. Edward's love of music extended from singing not only in his church choir, but in several community choirs including the Glastonbury Community Choir and The Legacy of Spirituals. A life of service permeated all aspects of Edward’s life. As a centerpiece, Edward was a life member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Edward will be remembered by family and friends as a guiding light. Along with his wife Maxine of 52 years, he leaves a daughter Kristi (Ignacio) of Vienna VA, a son Eric (Jacqunette) of Chicago, IL, and six grandchildren (Jaylon, Anthony, Sofia, Alejandro, Matthew, and Noah). In addition, he leaves a brother Rev Horace Mitchell (Ann) from Abbeville AL and several nieces and nephews. Edward was pre-deceased by his parents and a brother, Dr Leotis Peterman (Lucy). Funeral will be held on Tuesday, May 29, 2018 at 11 am at Hopewell Baptist Church 280 Windsor Ave. Windsor, CT Public calling hours begin at 9 am, with the Alpha Phi Alpha Omega service at 10:30 am.The family wishes to express its appreciation to the doctors and nurses at the Hoffman Heart and Vascular Care Institute at St. Francis Hospital for Edward's care. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Edward Mitchell Scholarship Fund c/o Beta Sigma Lambda Chapter, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. P.O. Box 891 Hartford, CT 06143.
