David Barnes Collins, 91, passed away peacefully on April 13, 2017, in Manchester, CT, surrounded by his family. Married in 1946, he was the husband of Dorothy Simler Collins for 70 wonderful years. He was born in on January 23, 1926, the son of Asher and Madeline Collins and lived his entire life in South Windsor, CT. After graduating from Ellsworth High School in 1944, he joined the army and served under General Patton in the 3rd Army Force in World War II in Czechoslovakia. For his entire life, he was a faithful and dedicated member of Wapping Community Church and served as a deacon and church president. He spent many hours working with fellow church members building, maintaining and improving the church property. His faith was evident in the love he showed to others and acknowledged his blessings every day. As a young man, he worked for Connecticut Milk Producers, delivering milk. Then he joined DeCarlie Express, delivering freight in Connecticut and Southern Massachusetts for 39 years. After retiring in 1989, he enjoyed traveling, gardening and spending time with family. He led his life to serve others. He is survived by his loving spouse, Dorothy, daughters, Nancy Calabrese and husband Charlie of South Windsor, CT and Wendy Krueger and husband Steve of Houston, TX, two grandchildren, Katelyn McMurdie and husband Ryan of Norwell, Mass, Justin Calabrese of South Windsor, CT and great granddaughter, Eloise McMurdie. He leaves behind a sister, Cynthia Waldron, sister in law, Charlotte Collins, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He is predeceased by brothers Porter, Sherman and George Collins. The family will receive friends for calling hours on Monday, April 17, from 4-7pm at the Samsel & Carmon Funeral Home, 419 Buckland Rd., South Windsor. A service to celebrate Dave's life will be held on Tuesday, April 18, at 11am, at Wapping Community Church, 1790 Ellington Road, South Windsor. Burial will be held at Wapping Cemetery with Military Honors, followed by a reception at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in his memory may be made to the Wapping Community Church, 1790 Ellington Rd., South Windsor, CT 06074.
