Claudia (Nicky) Jones, 48, passed away on January 8, 2018. She was born on September 9, 1969 in Jamaica to Marcia Tennant (Noble) and Courtney Jones. Claudia was raised in the household of her grandparents Dennis (Daddy) and Marjorie (Mummy) Mitchell as the baby sister to her aunts Pauline Murray (Mitchell) and Dawn Grant (Mitchell), uncle Milton Mitchell, and cousin Robert Evans. She migrated to Hartford CT in 1986 after attending St. Hugh’s High School for Girls, and enrolled in Capital Community College in the spring of 1987. She excelled and received a scholarship to Trinity College, where she graduated in 1992 with a B.A. in Women Studies. While at Trinity, she was a popular DJ on the college radio station, and hosted a program featuring Reggae/Caribbean music for several years. After college, she worked in Hartford’s City Hall but later decided to obtain her law degree from the University of Connecticut School of Law in 1999. She began her legal career at Hartford Superior Court from September 1999 to April 2000, where she served as a clerk to the Honorable Norris O’Neill. From May 2000 to June 2004, she worked in the New Haven office of the State of CT Division of Public Defender Services where she represented and advocated on behalf of indigent clients in various phases of misdemeanor and lower felony cases. In June 2004, she moved to the Division of Public Defender Services in Hartford, CT and zealously advocated on behalf of her clients accused of major felonies. She handled thousands of indigent clients over the course of her 18-year career and brought over 50 cases to verdict. She was a celebrated trial attorney with an illustrious career, always giving her absolute best to each case that she handled. In addition to her distinguished legal career, Claudia dedicated her life to the pursuit of education and served as an adjunct lecturer at the University of Hartford from 2005 and at Capital Community College from 2004, until her cancer diagnosis in 2017. Claudia was always invested in children’s education, and enjoyed spending time mentoring youth and touching many young lives in meaningful ways. Claudia met her wife, Crystal Jones in April of 2009. They were married on November 8th, 2012, and had their daughter, Claudia’s pride and joy, in 2013. She enjoyed travelling, spending time with her family, and had many interests including real estate and property management, photography, and music. Claudia was community-oriented, served on the Board of Directors of the West Indian Foundation, and was an active member of her church. Claudia is survived by her loving wife Crystal and beloved daughter Marley Elizabeth. She also leaves to mourn her: her grandparents, mother, three sisters and three brothers, an uncle, two aunts and host of nieces, nephews, loving cousins, and friends. A Memorial Service will be held at First Church of Windsor, 107 Palisado Avenue, Windsor, CT 06095, on Saturday, January 20, 2018 at 11 am. A repast will immediately follow in the church hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to The Claudia Jones Fund at the First Church of Windsor, supporting programs and scholarships for at risk youth in the Town of Windsor.
