Clarke King, 71, of Hartford, beloved husband of the late Loretta (Byrd) King, passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, July 17, 2017. Born in Hartford to the late James and Elizabeth (Franklin) King, he has been a Hartford resident all of his life and was a member of St. Michael Church in Hartford. Clarke worked as the supervisor for the City of Hartford Parks and Recreation Department and was very active in the local unions. He was the longtime President of AFSCME Local 1716, representing City, Library and XL Center workers, Secretary of Council 4 before becoming President in 2012 until present, the Executive Vice President of the Greater Hartford Central Labor Council and a CT AFL-CIO executive board member and delegate for many years. He served on the Capitol Workforce Development Board, the board of the United Way of Central and Northeastern CT, and was active in the Greater Hartford African American Alliance and the local chapter of the Coalition of Black Trade Unionists. His passion for helping others achieve justice earned him the respect of his community and the government of Hartford and the State of CT. An exceptional man, a loving husband, father and friend, he will be dearly missed. Clarke is survived by his son Clarke King, Jr. and his wife Sharon of Jersey City, NJ; his nephew that he raised as his own son, Andrew Schwapp and his daughter Tahirah Schwapp; his brothers, Garry King and his wife Yvonne of South Windsor and Bruce King of Hartford; and his sister Lee Peart of Bloomfield; his God daughter Lakia King; and a host of nieces and nephews. Besides his wife and parents, he was predeceased by his daughter Rosalynd King, his nephew and “adopted” son Asaph Schwapp, his brothers, Norman and Robert King, and his sisters, Jo-Ann Iverson, Roberta King and Ruth Elaine King. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 AM Tuesday, July 25 at St. Justin Church, 230 Blue Hills Ave Hartford, followed by burial in Mount St. Benedict Cemetery, Bloomfield. His family will receive friends on Monday, July 24 from 5 PM to 8 PM at the Carmon Funeral Home, 807 Bloomfield Ave Windsor, and also on Tuesday, July 25 from 10 AM to 11 AM at the church.
