Catherine D. “Kay” Wakefield, 103, wife for 53 years to the late Cyrus W “Jack” Wakefield, passed away peacefully at St. Francis Hospital on Tuesday, May 22, 2018. Kay was born in Newbury, VT, daughter of the late Frank and Christina (McEwan) Durant. Growing up on a farm in Vermont, she learned to work hard, and she carried this work ethic throughout her life. She kept a “neat-as-a-pin” house, raised two children, and retired from G. Fox & Co. after 26 years of service. She was a woman of great determination and spirit who will be remembered, by all who knew and loved her, for her loyalty and generosity. Kay is survived by her two loving children, Durward D. Wakefield of East Hartford; and Joyce Brayman Amici of Chicago; IL. Besides her husband and parents, Kay was predeceased by two brothers, Harold McEwan and Fred Durant; and a sister, Lois Durant. Her family will receive friends on Tuesday, May 29, 4-7 p.m., at Samsel & Carmon Funeral Home, 419 Buckland Rd., South Windsor. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, May 30, 11 a.m., at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church of which Kay was a member for 65 plus years, 110 Ellington Rd., East Hartford. Burial will be on Thursday, May 31, 12 Noon, in Sawyer Cemetery, Bradford, VT. The family wishes to express its appreciation to the doctors and nurses at St. Francis Hospital for Kay’s care and needs. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Kay to Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, 110 Ellington Rd., East Hartford, 06108 or to the Make A Wish Foundation, 126 Monroe Tpke., Trumbull, CT 06611.
