Catherine (Burdett) Szilva, 94, of Farmington, formerly of West Hartford, beloved wife of the late Stephen Szilva, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 20, 2016. Catherine was born May 14, 1921 in New York City to the late Catherine and Albert Burdett. She married Steve on September 10, 1939 in New York and had four children. They moved to West Hartford in 1953 and lived there until she moved to Brookdale Senior Living in 2007. Before her retirement Catherine worked at Connecticut Mutual Insurance Co. She was an active member of Bethany Lutheran Church in West Hartford and was involved in the Lutheran Missionary League and the Dorcas Society. She had traveled to Europe and Hawaii and loved camping with her husband and children. She leaves her daughter, Cathi Chamberlin and her husband Bud, her sons, Steve Szilva and his wife Marilyn and Bill and his wife Patti. She also leaves her grandchildren, Chris and Acacia Chamberlin, Kim and Joe Reale as well as eight great grandchildren, Scott, Michael, Alex, Jeffrey, Julia, Taylor, Casey and Caitlin. In addition to her husband and parents Catherine was predeceased by her daughter, Christine and her twin sister, Grace Grindall and her brother, Albert Burdett. The family would like to thank her caregivers, Ester, Mabel and Faith who she loved as they loved her. The family would also like to thank the McLean Hospice, especially Ruth, for the loving way they took care of Mom. A Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, January 27, 11 a.m. at the Bethany Lutheran Church, 1655 Boulevard, West Hartford. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery, West Hartford. Her family will receive friends from 10-11 a.m. prior to the service at the church.
