Ben P. Herring was called home to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, April 7, 2017 while at his home. Ben fought the good fight, finished his race, and kept the faith for over 80 years. He was born in Shelby, North Carolina on July 10, 1936 and grew up the eldest boy in a family of eight children. He entered the workforce early in life as a means of helping support his family and therefore sacrificed a formal education. His generosity and dedication to his younger brothers and sisters enabled them to achieve great accomplishments and become successful members within their communities. Ben resided in Connecticut for over 58 years having lived in Hartford, Windsor Locks, Simsbury, and most recently Bloomfield. He was an intelligent, self-made man who proudly owned and operated a Gulf fuel station in Hartford during the 70s and in later years, owned Herring Industrial in partnership with his son Terry. Although private and quiet at times, Ben commanded respect and carried himself with dignity and confidence throughout his life. He was a devoted and hardworking husband and father who set an example for his sons. His demonstration of business fairness combined with a strong work ethic served as a role model for not only his sons but his grandchildren and extended family. Ben lost his wife, Ginnie Marie Herring after having been blessed with three sons and 40 years of marriage. He was later privileged to find love again and married Mary Jo (Donaldson) Herring. The happy couple shared many years together before her unexpected passing in 2010. Ben was a man of unwavering principles and faith in God. He entered into a relationship with Christ when he was saved over 30 years ago. His ministry in the Gethsemane Missionary Baptist Church congregation in Bloomfield was a vital part of his life, and he humbly served as a past Trustee and Deacon. His passing is deeply felt by his Pastor and church family. Ben's memory is forever cherished by three sons, Jerry Herring of Bloomfield, Terry Herring and his wife Eva Herring of New Britain, and Perry Herring of Hartford; nine grandchildren, Tyrone Herring of NYC, NY, Jennie Short of Hartford, Brandi Gaddy Crews of West Hartford, Ramon Herring of East Hartford, Shamone Herring of East Hartford, Monique Herring of East Hartford, Terry Herring, Jr. of New Britain, Jerome Wetherspoon of New Britain, Tykesha Nelms of New Britain; six great-grandchildren, Taje Short of Hartford, Tylon Washington, Jr. of East Hartford, Elijah Herring of East Hartford, Alaja Nelms of New Britain, Jasmine Herring of East Hartford, and Bailey Crews of West Hartford; three sisters, Lula Belle Baker of Shelby, NC, Barbara H. Oates of Windsor, and Minnie Tilghman of Bloomfield; a brother, William "Billy" Herring of Shelby, NC; a brother-in-law, Roy Tilghman of Bloomfield; a sister-in-law, Lillian Herring of Shelby, NC and a host of nieces and nephews, friends and family. In addition to his two wives, Ben was predeceased by his parents, Ben P. Herring, Sr. and Mary (Baker) Herring; a sister, Ruby "Bert" Steadman; two brothers, Thomas Herring and Willie James "Buster" Baker; two nephews, Sonny Baker and Vincent Herring; and a step-daughter, Penny Johnson. A homegoing service will be held at 12 p.m., Monday, April 17, 2017 at Gethsemane Missionary Baptist Church, 570 Tower Ave., Bloomfield with viewing from 11 a.m. – 12 p.m. prior to the service. Interment will follow the service in Mountain View Cemetery, Bloomfield.
