Alfred James Therkelsen, 90, of Barkhamsted and formerly of Granby, beloved husband for 66 years of Patricia Anne (O'Connor) Therkelsen, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 24, 2016, in Avon. Born in Hartford on March 23, 1926, son of the late Alfred J. Therkelsen and Florence (Baker) Therkelsen, he was raised in Hartford, was a graduate of Weaver High School, Class of 1943, and he moved to Granby in 1957 where he lived until his retirement in 1985. Alfred and his wife then moved to Arizona where they lived for 20 years before returning to Connecticut in 2010 and settling in Barkhamsted. Alfred was a veteran of World War II and served in the Asiatic Pacific Theater with the U.S. Navy until his honorable discharge as a Fireman First Class in 1946. After his time in the service, Alfred returned to Connecticut and took a position with the City of Hartford Parks Department where he worked for over 34 years until his retirement. A longtime Granby resident and a proud veteran, Alfred was a member of Shannon-Shattuck Post #182, American Legion. Alfred was a large-scale model airplane enthusiast who built and piloted his own radio-controlled model airplanes. He competed throughout the United States and while living in Arizona he taught model airplane flying to people who were new to the sport. Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, Peter Therkelsen and his wife Lauren of Goshen, MA and Richard Therkelsen and his wife Theresa of Granby; two daughters, Maryellen Marquardt and her husband Alfred of Gales Ferry, CT and Seabrook, SC and Eileen Andryzeck and her husband John of Barkhamsted; a brother, Thomas G. Therkelsen of Hartford; eight grandchildren, Ryan Therkelsen, Alexander Therkelsen and his wife Jennifer, Kristin LaFlamme and her husband Kurt, Kimberly Chamberlain and her husband Dustyn, Devin Marquardt, Geoff Marquardt, Jacob Andryzeck and his wife Casey, and Tyler Andryzeck; and two great grandchildren, Colby Andryzeck and Samantha Chamberlain. Services will be held in May, 2017 at a date and time to be announced.
