Tribute & Message From The Family

Eugene ‘Gene’ Robert Stursberg, 79, went to be home with his Lord and Savior on June 7th, 2018. He is survived by his wife Linnea (Soderberg) Stursberg, with whom he recently celebrated 57 years of marriage. He was born April 16, 1939 in Bronx, NY, the son of the late Eugene and Viola (Gaskell) Stursberg. He remained an avid New York Yankees fan even after moving to Connecticut, never wanting to take off his Yankees hat. Gene was a veteran of the U.S. Army and National Guard and was a salesman and business owner. After retiring, Gene enjoyed living life with his beloved wife Linnea, as they travelled, frequented Rhode Island and Florida beaches, and spent time with friends and family. At the beach he enjoyed walking, clamming, saltwater fishing, bodysurfing the waves, and building sandcastles. He loved to go on walks with family, feed ducks with his grandchildren, and build model train sets. Trusting in Jesus as his Savior, his faith was very important to him. He was good-natured, kind, and loving - often letting his grandchildren play pranks on him and playing computer games with them on his old desktop. He loved animals, and his granddog Dobby was a great source of comfort near the end of his life. Gene had an amazing sense of humor, making everyone laugh in all situations and when they least expected it. His bright and playful personality will be deeply missed. Gene is survived by his children, Karl D. and his wife Sarah of W. Suffield, CT, Karen L. Smith of Granby, CT and her husband Thomas; and his grandchildren, Laura A. Stursberg and Melissa K. Smith. Gene was predeceased by his only grandson, Matthew T. Smith, who followed in his grandpa’s footsteps by being a fan of the Yankees and having a wonderful sense of humor. They were reunited in Heaven the day before Matthew’s 27th birthday. A memorial service will be held on June 24th, 2018 at 2:00pm at Nelson Hall, Elim Park Place, 150 Cook Hill Road, in Cheshire, CT, 06410. Samsel & Carmon Funeral Home has care of the arrangements.
