Tribute & Message From The Family

William "Bill" Henry Roell, 60, of Avon, Connecticut, beloved husband of Peggy (John) Roell, passed away peacefully at home with his family by his side on Monday, May 1, 2017. Born in Arlington, Virginia, Bill was the adored son of the late Edgar and Gladys (Saha) Roell, and a graduate of McLean High School in Falls Church, Virginia. He proudly attended the University of Virginia where he earned a Bachelor's degree in Applied Mathematics from the School of Engineering. Later, he earned a Masters in Business Administration from the University of Chicago, Illinois. While in Chicago, he met the love of his life, and they moved to Miami, Florida where both of their sons were born. There, Bill worked for Ryder System, Inc. for 15 years. Their next move was to Avon, Connecticut, where Bill worked in various roles at CIGNA Healthcare for 20 years. Bill was a dedicated leader with the Boy Scouts of America in Avon. In June 2016, he ended an 11 year stretch as Scoutmaster for Troop 274. Prior to that he was Cubmaster for Pack 122. A model scouter for all who he came into contact with, Bill was always looking for his next adventure. Bill was proud of the growth of Avon's scouting program and especially all of the opportunities it continues to afford the youth in Avon and beyond. Some of Bill's favorite stories originated during his High Adventure expeditions that ranged from trips to California to Maine, and Florida to Alaska. His trips to Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico with Andy and Garrett were the highlights of his scouting career. Bill truly lived by the Scout Oath and Law. Bill was an enthusiastic friend to all and constantly searched to have F-U-N in all aspects of his life. With his boundless ambition and energy, Bill was able to turn an average gathering into an Event, while still being present in each moment. His highly creative mind allowed him to find joy in overcoming any challenge that he faced. Bill enjoyed watching sports in person and on TV. He was a 14-time winner of the Scopricorn Cup and an avid supporter of the Miami Hurricanes, Washington Redskins, Virginia Cavaliers, and every team his sons played on. Bill's happiest moments were with family and friends. He loved when he was outside enjoying nature, in crowded arenas for Bruce Springsteen's concerts, around the dinner table with family, and on the beach with a cold drink. In addition to his loving wife of 33 years, Peggy, Bill is survived by his two sons, Garrett and Andy and Andy's fiancé Tierney Corrigan; a sister, Sandy Robertson and her husband Mike, his mother-in-law, Marilyn John, brothers and sisters in law, Beth and Richard Loehne, Gigi and John Montzingo, Rick and Carolyn John, nieces, nephews, and many close friends from every stage of his life. Bill's family will receive friends on Friday, May 5, 2017 from 5-8 PM at the Carmon Funeral Home & Family Center, 301 Country Club Road, Avon. A Celebration of Life service for Bill will be celebrated on Saturday, May 6 at 3 PM at the Avon High School Auditorium, 510 West Avon Road, Avon. Donations in Bill's memory may be made to the William Roell Endowment Fund, CT Rivers Council BSA, 60 Darling St., East Hartford, CT 06108, www.ctrivers.org or to the International Lyme and Associated Disease Society (ILADS) P.O. Condolence & Memory Journal

We always looked forward to your Christmas updates each year, (an I always said I would send you an email update on us... did you get it yet???!!!) and we treasured the time you had in Miami - especially at Kendall UMC- including when you entrusted our son Tommy to "babysit" Andy and Garrett... Robin and Steve told us today about Bill's passing... how shocked we were. And how sad we were to hear about it. We are thinking of you and the family with much love and appreciation for the time Bill had on earth, touching so many lives. LOVE TO ALL...

To the Roell family,
I was so sorry to hear about Bill's passing. I have known Bill through work on the Cigna Global Health Benefits project over the past year and a half. We spoke at least once most days and spent many hours discussing how to improve things on the project. He always spoke so fondly of his family and his involvement with the Eagle Scouts. He was so proud of how well his scouts performed during their trips.I will miss Bill and the opportunities to work with him again at HealthSpring but his warmth, kindness, and gentle spirit will remain in my heart forever.
My thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time.

Dear Peggy: We are so very sorry to hear about Bill. He was always the guy you wanted to be around, and also the guy you wanted to be. His smart, positive, energetic approach to life was so infectious. We loved our time together in Miami, as we all learned from each other in raising our kids. That was such an important time in our lives, and he had such an influence on all of us. Love, Robin and Steve

I was lucky to get to work with Bill for many years and see his brilliant mind at work. I enjoyed sharing stories between his involvement in scouts and mine with a local search and rescue team. He took the time to care and show a personal interest in the lives of all he touched. I am deeply saddened by his loss and can only hope that the amazing legacy he has left behind will in some way be comforting to Peggy, Andy and Garrett during this difficult time. With Deepest Sympathy for your Loss.

We are sorry to hear about the loss of a great man. Colin, I , and the rest of the scouts from Suffield were blessed to be part of the 2013 NSJ Troop C237, where Bill showed he loved helping young (and some of us more seasoned) men grow into great Scouts and Scouters without having a son attending. I learned much from Bill on how to get a bunch of scouts from different places to be a cohesive unit. He was a model of the Scout Oath and Law in all aspects of his life.

We have you all in our prayers in this time of loss.
The Works Family

Dear Peggy, Andy and Garrett.... our deepest sympathy. Bill had a significant impact on our boy's lives and I'm sorry I could not thank him personally but I will thank YOU!

He was a pillar of community!! I remember Garrett watching him at the scout meetings...."star struck"! Bill was "Super Dad"!! His life was cut too short but WOW!!! did he jam a lot of "fathering" into his life!! I remember one occasion...he asked the boys to think of their favorite song...and then he disclosed one of his was "Imagine" by John Lennon.

"Imagine" ..."living for today"....He lived, in the moment, an amazing life with an amazing family. I can't think of anyone who could have squeezed another drop out of life while they were in it... Bill Roell!

Thank you!

Peggy, Garret and Andy, you don't know us, Gary and I were also part of the applied math gang from UVA. Bill was the most kind and fun loving person in our little math nerd group. Almost forty years after the fact, and we still remember what a great person he was. We are so sad to hear of his passing, what a great impact he had on all who knew him. A life well lived. Our sincerest condolences.

Dear Peggy, Garrett, and Andy,

Our deepest sympathy to all of you. I was one of the applied math "gang" at U.Va., and we were a F.U.N-loving, supportive, and close-knit group. I can't believe that he's gone. Cliched, but it always seems like we are ageless. We enjoyed reading about each other's kids and marking the milestones (trading holiday letters!), so down deep we knew that time passes, and love deepens. Like you, Andy and Garrett, my youngest achieved his Eagle Scout rank and I know how proud that makes a parent. I know that Bill went above and beyond and was truly devoted to scouting. I am sure he was an inspirational leader. Peggy, I know how devoted Bill was to his family - a long marriage is quite an achievement - and what a huge loss this is for all of you. Our sincere condolences.
